The first thing a magic user of Rick's world must learn is that magic has a price. Every spell requires something. Weather or not this is something tangible depends on the kind of spell.
Most basic spells require being able to draw the magical energy in to perform it as well as feeling and willing the type of emotion that is required.
Spells intent of harm require anger or hate to get them started. If it is really dark? Some hair or blood must be given up but it depends on the exact wording for how the spell was written.
Spells that are meant to defend? The intent must always be to protect. Love is the easiest emotion to go to for this and the most powerful. Pride might taint a protection spell.
These are just two of a wide range of spells. It is known that no spell is actually inherently evil. It is about intention. Intention is the most important part of a wizard's casting. He or she must always know what they want to happen.
The second most important part is confidence. The caster must believe in their skill and their ability to draw on magic. If either of these are in question within the wizard's mind the spell will fail.
If a spell fails anything could happen.
For example a wizard is trying to divine a location of an item and fails on this level? They may even lose their eyesight for a time because they did not believe. These side effects tend to not be for good unless the spell was meant to heal or harm. The wizard may die if they mess up that kind of spell. Even worse if they are trying to heal someone they may do more harm than good.
While magic is amazing and wonderful always keep in mind everything has a price. Everything has risk so study well. The rewards for knowledge gained could be endless.
