Magic

ichoosemagic: (Are you willing to pay the cost?)
The first thing a magic user of Rick's world must learn is that magic has a price. Every spell requires something. Weather or not this is something tangible depends on the kind of spell.

Most basic spells require being able to draw the magical energy in to perform it as well as feeling and willing the type of emotion that is required.

Spells intent of harm require anger or hate to get them started. If it is really dark? Some hair or blood must be given up but it depends on the exact wording for how the spell was written.

Spells that are meant to defend? The intent must always be to protect. Love is the easiest emotion to go to for this and the most powerful. Pride might taint a protection spell.

These are just two of a wide range of spells. It is known that no spell is actually inherently evil. It is about intention. Intention is the most important part of a wizard's casting. He or she must always know what they want to happen.

The second most important part is confidence. The caster must believe in their skill and their ability to draw on magic. If either of these are in question within the wizard's mind the spell will fail.

If a spell fails anything could happen.

For example a wizard is trying to divine a location of an item and fails on this level? They may even lose their eyesight for a time because they did not believe. These side effects tend to not be for good unless the spell was meant to heal or harm. The wizard may die if they mess up that kind of spell. Even worse if they are trying to heal someone they may do more harm than good.

While magic is amazing and wonderful always keep in mind everything has a price. Everything has risk so study well. The rewards for knowledge gained could be endless.
ichoosemagic: (Have my attention)
He had just thought to test a spell. He wanted to see if he could get to the library without driving his car down there. Simple trans-location spell. He felt it, he visualized it. He tried to will it but then he felt something.

One of the fissures in magic he was warned about. Sometimes there is a break in the thread of magic because of unknown nexus points. Magic had been pulled there unnaturally. These fissures lead to different worlds that were not really meant to have magic. And for a young wizard like him who is still learning to wield his power and temper his emotions so they do not turn on him well, this was dangerous.

He lets out a startled scream when he feels himself yanked. he just barely manages to grab the book and flinches at a bright spark of magic trying to snap away from him.

He falls onto hard pavement and hears what he thinks is a truck screech to a halt.

He groans because his grandfather is going to kill him. There are other things out there that could get to a young wizard besides a slightly unnatural break in the magic. Dark faeries might strip the flesh from his bones. The wrong kind of vampire? Would totally eat him because he might flirt with girls his age but he is still a virgin.

Oh and in this case he may have magicked himself into a world in front of a mundane man. Crap.

He blinks when a farmer stares down at him. Then yelps as he is yanked to his feet.

"You're not hurt, sorcerer. Just stunned," Mr Gruff decides. Then stares at the very modern clothing and snorts. "Come on, boy. I'm taking you to the one person I trust to handle this properly."

Rick blinks and then snaps back to awareness. "I'm not a sorcerer. I'm a wizard. Wait. Where am I? This isn't Bethelham."

Mr. Gruff snorts at the young man. "Of course it ain't. Come along, boy."

For a moment Rick just teeters on his feet then adjusts his back pack and holds onto the book tightly as he climbs in. He looks at the farmer with confusion as they turn around and head back towards the main part of town. The farmer finds a place to park his truck and looks at the boy. "He doesn't skin children alive. Rumor. Silly one, really."

That just has Rick wonder over that more. He gets out following behind Mr. Gruff.

The farmer marches towards some sort of pawn shop with purpose knowing the teenager is trailing behind him. When they enter the shop he takes a very calm look around then grabs Rick by the elbow giving him a stern look and half drags him up to the counter.

"Mr.Gold. Terribly sorry to interrupt you but, this young man fell out of the air in front of my truck. Magic. Could have gotten his fool self killed."

That is when Rick finds his voice again. "That wasn't my fault. Seriously."

Mr. Gruff just gives Gold a silent look. He really is not inclined to believe the tall gangly boy who doesn't look old enough to shave in Mr. Gruff's eyes. Mr. Gruff might be judging the boy harshly. The young man himself just looks mildly irritated that he was just called a fool by a stranger.
